Mick McCloskey joins Team32Red for Battle of Malta 2019
We’re proud to announce that Mick McCloskey, the Irish poker legend, will be wearing Team32Red colours for MPNPT’s Battle of Malta in October. Mick will add a wealth of experience to the cause and – with lifetime tournament cashes around $600,000 – will no doubt be an inspiration to our players who are just starting out on their poker adventures.
Mick was kind enough to do an interview with 32Red Poker, and the result gives us a fascinating look into how he got into the game and some of his thoughts about how poker offers far more than money…
Mick: I’ve been waiting for you guys to bring the tournament back to Ireland! I thought it went very well here last time. So, I’ve been playing all the Irish ranking events since, along with a couple of trips to Vegas every year. That has kept me pretty busy as there have been a lot of tournaments in Ireland over the last few years.
32Red: You’ve been a prominent figure in the live poker circuit for a number of years now. How did you get started in Poker?
Mick: I started playing little cash games in a local pub and then some small 5 card stud tournaments run as fundraisers for local sporting clubs. At one of these I met Terry Rogers and Liam Flood, who started The Irish Open tournament in 1981. Then these two came to N. Ireland to run a Hold’em tourney with 1st prize being a trip to the WSOP in Las Vegas. This was despite the fact that none of us had ever heard of Texas Hold’em! This was in the early eighties and they told me tales about the WSOP and I was fascinated. I promised myself a trip to Vegas and went there to Binion’s Horseshoe in 1987 and have been going annually ever since.
Mick: No, not really the guarantee – I have some friends living in Malta and have heard good things about it. And, of course, I have played in your event before.
32Red: Money aside… what would it mean to you having the BoM trophy on your mantelpiece? (Along with your many other awards, no doubt!)
Mick: It means I would have to find more room on the mantelpiece, lol. But that would be great.
32Red: Tell us one of your fondest memories of traveling the poker circuit…
Mick: Unfortunately, I was reminded recently of all the happy times I experienced the pleasure of the company of my friend Mad Marty Wilson over the last 25 years or so. As you probably know, Marty passed away last week. I remember twice being with Marty in Vegas when he ran up a tiny bankroll playing blackjack, so he could play the WSOP $10,000 main event. Both times he handed me the money and said, “Now, go buy me into the main event Mick” – as if I was his lucky Irish mascot or something!
32Red: We look forward to seeing you in October – have you planned any sightseeing while on the island?
Mick: I would like to take some time to look around Malta. Hopefully my friends over there will point me in the right direction.
32Red: Finally – what would be your best piece of advice for anyone new to the live poker scene?
Mick: It’s a great way to travel to new places and make new friends, hopefully for life. So get out there and enjoy the ride…
